Hypochondriac's like Gifts Too

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

I will be the first to admit that I am a bit of a hypochondriac. I freak out whenever I find any bump or lump. I google every ailment associated with my delusional ailments whenever something doesn't seem quite right. Although it is quite funny I'm not ashamed of it simply because I'm a strong believer that it is better to be safe than sorry.

Tonight I found a hard, BB pellet sized lump under the skin of the lower part of the underside of my right arm. It's a bit painful when I touch it but other than that I would have never noticed it had I not been scratching myself like a mad woman.

You see, among my many delusional ailments I do in fact have a real one. I'm allergic to the sun. I have been since I was a child. I get taken over by small little bumps whenever I stay in sunlight for too long. It hurts my skin and it takes several weeks sometimes months to go away. Because of this, I am more apt to get skin cancer.

This is why I'm currently acting like I belong in the looney bin. My fiance' just laughs at me. He finds my worries quite entertaining. He said that it would probably go away and that I should just ignore it. What? How can I possibly ignore what I'm predestined to freak out about? :P

At this point I'm not sure if I should just wait and see what happens or if I should schedule an appointment with a doctor. I am seriously lacking in the financial department right now but a coffin would be a pricey item for my fiance' to buy as well.

So...what do you guys think? Should I get it checked or should I just ignore it and hope it goes away?

Anyway, my obsession with my current "condition" inspired me to search the Etsy site for a shop with items relating to the human anatomy. I'm very happy to say I found the ideal item for someone like myself. It's a money clip with a human heart on it. It's actually quite pretty. I'm not the type of girl to use purses and wallets quite often so this is something I would actually use on a day to day basis.

I found the money clip at a shop called Anomaly. The seller has only had 2 sales and I find it so hard to believe! All of the items on the ship are very intriguing and affordable. There's everything from necklaces to rings to money clips to bobby pins and belt buckles and even small tins. You guys should take a look. You might find something you like.

I wish I could tell you more about the seller unfortunately as of now he or she does not have a profile or a shop announcement. Actually, that might be why he or she is not getting many sales. Those things are essential to an Etsy seller. Well...at least that's what I've been told.

Don't worry, you are not alone, I am a hypochondriac too. I prefer to google for info rather than rely totally on the doctor's advice or diagnose. The same goes to my pet dogs! I will google and research on their symptoms, armed myself with many info before seeing the vet.

Not sure is it the same, but I have a friend who has a similar painful lump under her armpit and it didn't subside for 2 months! She consulted a doctor and was told that it was an undergrowth pimple! The doctor just did a surgical cut to drain out the pus, and it healed by itself!

Well, here in Australia, I guess we are lucky in that we can go to a doctor for free...so if you were here and a resident, I would say, sure go to the doc (which I am doing tomorrow to have a mole removed)...but I don't know what they charge over where you are...still I would err on the side of caution myself.

Sophine: it's actually under my skin - that's what freaks me out even more. My fiance's aunt told me I should wait to see if it grows.

Suse: Yea I wish I could go to the doctor for free! I haven't gone to the doctor for a long time because I was unable to afford it. Pretty sad to say especially since I needed to go for several preventative procedures for endometrial cancer. My OBGYN at one point was very concerned and I had several biopsies, (all negative) but I couldn't afford it anymore.

It had to do with the fact that I had too much estrogen and my progesterone levels were not where they were supposed to be. Apparently having too much estrogen can be dangerous and can eventually lead to cancer.

I'm going to give it a week or so I think. It would probably take me that long anyway to get onto the doctor's schedule.

Call me crazy, but I think you should have it checked. I would probably do like you said and observe it for a week, but it could be anything from a tumor (benign or malignant) to a simple ingrown hair. Hope you're okay! Keep us posted!

Great shop find!

Hmm, I would probably wait and see how it does. But get it checked if it doesn't go away or get better in a couple of days.

Thanks guys for the advice! My fiance's aunt told me a story about a friend of hers who found a lump and was uncertain whether she should get it checked or not. She convinced her to go see the doctor and guess what? She ended up being diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, she is doing well now --- thanks to early detection! That being said, I'm going to make an appointment with the doc. ;)
